Don't Love Yourself, Know Yourself
Because this world is filled with toxic positivity and we don't need it.
This week’s post was going to be a sad soliloquy about why I started Wegovy in August.
But, why? It’s not that serious and I’m proud of myself.
In writing this 1,000-word essay about how I've hidden behind my weight over the last few years, I started to think about “perception” versus “reality” in this situation.
What will the perception be in admitting I started this journey? Can I encourage people to love themselves, to enjoy cooking, while also finding my own body love through a major lifestyle change?
More than that, am I encouraging you to love yourself, or am I encouraging you to know yourself?
I believe that there’s a distinct difference between the two, and I’m here to say, it’s more important to know yourself.
According to Aristotle (here she goes, bringing in that Freshman year philosophy jargon)
“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”
If you don’t know yourself, you cannot even begin to design the life that you want.
You have to know the deep, ugly corners of your brain if you want any chance of understanding the world around you. You cannot begin to understand the dynamics of the world around you if you don’t know all the pieces of yourself.
Your life is a reflection of your habits, reactions, beliefs, thoughts, fears, worries, and perceptions. And whether or not you’re aware of it, all these things come together to shape your mindset, who you are, and the way you visualize yourself.
To know yourself is the most powerful way to release the shame we’ve been conditioned to live behind.
This week, I hope you look outside the groupthink, and mob mentality about “self-love” and embrace those little inner quirks that make us so unique.
JOURNAL PROMPT OF THE WEEK
If you could share a secret about yourself with the world and remain anonymous, what would you share?
The first step to knowing yourself is releasing those little secrets that hold you back. This week, spend some time thinking about the secrets that hold you back from being your most fulfilled self. Then, think of an action you can take to release yourself from it.
My secret? I hid myself behind my weight in an attempt to protect myself from ever being hurt again.
My action? I changed my lifestyle in July and got a very powerful tool in my toolbelt (through a doctor!) in August. I want to be more front-facing, and this is the first step to that.
As always, I’m so grateful you’re here.
In exciting news, all the recipes from this space are now available on www.saltwithsoul.com!
We also have some journals and fun merchandise on Etsy!
It hasn’t been easy, but I love building this little world of mine and you being here encourages me to keep pushing past my limit lines.
Thank you. 🖤
