With Salt: Ben Franklin's Horseradish Sauce
because we're not just American on the Fourth of July
Happy Friday, friends.
I’m a day late this week on all our postings, but I’m showing up and showing out. I even made a reel for this week’s With Salt that is ready to post when this hits your inbox. I mean, the content churning out of this universe is just::chef’s kiss::.
(I kid, I kid)
When I was in Philadelphia a few weeks ago, I picked up a cookbook aptly titled “Stirring the Pot with Benjamin Franklin” and I was obsessed with the fact that our culture has somehow made Bifocal Ben a satirical emblem of history.
Since then, I randomly flip through and pick a recipe to make. This week, it was his Horseradish Sauce.
Starkly different from that creamy, horseradish sauce from restaurants, this horseradish sauce is brazen in flavor, chunky in texture, and surprisingly simple. Which, that does sum up our Founding Fathers, so heehaw, America.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
2 tablespoons of butter
1 teaspoon of grated horseradish, either from a jar or freshly grated.
1 teaspoon of nutmeg
1 large egg yolk
1/2 cup of milk
PUT IT ALL TOGETHER:
Grab a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, stir in the horseradish and nutmeg. Stir a little bit more. Let it sit.
In a bowl, lightly beat the egg and the milk together. Stir your pot (tehehe) then gradually add in your egg/milk mixture. Stir. Let it cook and thicken and then serve.
Viola! You’re livin’ like Benny, friends.
I served mine over a steak loin with turmeric farro grains and it was delicious.
As a follow-up to Tuesday’s post, Luna joined us earth-side Wednesday. She is feisty, spunky, and fighting for her life. My heart is in Philadelphia as they wait and see how Luna progresses. As a reminder, 15% of all proceeds from the Salt with Soul Shop will be donated to the GoFundMe setup for their family.
There are so many success stories about Children surviving CDH, like this one of Emerson, and it’s my prayer that one day soon we’ll be reading Luna’s.
As always, I’m grateful you’re here. I hope you each have a slow weekend, and I’ll see you Monday with a little bit of Soul.
